Chapter 2
Cole didn’t look away from the German.
He’d met men like this before, the kind who thought the war was just a setback, not a loss. Clean-cut, rigid, eyes full of certainty. Dangerous men, because they still believed in something.
And believing men got other people killed.
"I wasn’t finished talking to the lady," Cole said lazily, rolling his shoulders.
The blond German barely spared him a glance. "This does not concern you, Herr Harper."
That got Cole’s attention.
He hadn’t given his name.
Evelyn exhaled softly, just enough for him to notice. She’d known this was coming.
The German took a step forward. "Get up. Come with us. Now."
"Are you deaf or just stupid?" Cole muttered, tipping back the last of his whiskey. "You lost the war, pal. If you’re looking for a plate of humble pie, this place only serves drinks."
The German’s face twitched. Just a flicker of something dark and violent.
Cole had seen enough.
He moved first.
